Changing Times
On Sunday 3 June the opening of the exposition Changing Times takes place in the Cobra Museum in Amstelveen. Fine Art researcher Esmé Valk made the new installation The Importance of the Composed Domain for this exposition, which will be on show until 9 September 2012.
Marcel Hiller - Der Makler

The Fox’s Legacy - Manifesta 9 Parallel Events
Onlangs is een industriële ruïne gevonden die opviel door zijn merkwaardige constructie. Deze vondst leidde tot een stroom van speculatieve analyses en verklaringen over haar herkomst en betekenis. Toch blijft het onduidelijk uit welke tijd zij komt en wat haar werkelijke functie is geweest. De tentoonstelling The Fox’s Legacy (De erfenis van de vos) openbaart dit vergeten erfgoed uit de Zuid-Limburgse regio. Monumenten dienen om te herinneren maar confronteren ons ook met ons vergeten. Wat gebeurde er precies, wat betekende dat en welke gevolgen had het, wie waren er bij betrokken – zijn de allereerste vragen die maar zelden tot tevreden antwoorden leiden. Dat geeft ruimte voor de verbeelding die de kloof van het verleden kan overbruggen en waar verhalen vrij over heen bewegen.
Vanuit die achtergrond stellen Haseeb Ahmed, Clifford Borress, Steven Chodoriwsky, Jasper Coppes en Ina Kwon zich in The Fox’s Legacy twee kernvragen: hoe kunnen we de transformatie van de sociale, historische en ecologische bestemmingen van ons landschap zichtbaar maken? En is het heden uiteindelijk niet meer dan de plaats van de eindeloze herhaling van de constructie, deconstructie en reconstructie van ons collectief geheugen?
Met de tentoonstelling The Fox’s Legacy neemt Jan van Eyck Academie deel aan het Parallel Events programma van Manifesta 9, de Europese Biennale voor Hedendaagse Kunst die dit jaar plaatsvindt in en rond de mijnsite van Waterschei, Genk (BE).
The Fox’s Legacy opent zaterdag 9 juni om 17:00, en loopt tot en met 30 september 2012. De tentoonstelling is geopend van maandag t/m vrijdag van 9u tot 17u. U bent van harte welkom!

The Fox’s Legacy - Manifesta 9 Parallel Events
Recently a peculiar industrial ruin was found that struck the eye due to its curious construction. This discovery led to an impulse of speculative analyses and explanations about its origin and meaning. It remains unclear what its purpose may have been, or in which period it should be situated. The Fox’s Legacy (De erfenis van de vos) reveals this forgotten inheritance of the Zuid Limburg region. Landmarks such as these might be receptacles of forced forgetting rather than commemoration. Consequently, imagination takes up space in the stories that fill in the abyss of memory.
Out of this background, Haseeb Ahmed, Clifford Borress, Steven Chodoriwsky, Jasper Coppes and Ina Kwon pose two key questions: how do we visualize the transformation of the social, historical and environmental destinations of our landscape? And what is the present but the site of a constant rehearsal of the construction, deconstruction and reconstruction of our collective memory?
With the exhibition The Fox’s Legacy, Jan van Eyck Academie takes part in the Parallel Events program of Manifesta 9, the European Biennial for Contemporary Art that takes place in and around the coalmine of Waterschei, Genk (BE).
The Fox’s Legacy opens Saturday 9 June at 17:00h and runs until 30 September. The exhibition is open from Monday to Friday from 9:00h to 17:00h. You are most welcome!

Theorieweek juni
De eerste week van juni staat opnieuw in het teken van de theorieweek. De week gaat op dinsdag 5 juni van start met een lezing van Jodi Dean, hoogleraar politieke wetenschappen aan de Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY (US). Dean behandelt de theorie van het communistisch verlangen via een kritiek van Wendy Brown, Antonio Negri en Alain Badiou. Filippo del Lucchese (Brunel University, Londen, UK) volgt met een lezing over de symptomatische verhouding tussen wet en conflict bij Spinoza.
Meer Spinoza op woensdagochtend tijdens het After 1968-seminar over feministische interpretaties van diens werk, onder meer door Anne Lefebvre. Voor de woensdagmiddag staan seminars over Simondon en Benjamin gepland; de woensdagavond staat in het teken van CLiC.
Op donderdag 6 en vrijdag 7 juni vindt Formalization and Dialectics plaats, een tweedaagse conferentie gewijd aan de ‘reanimatie van dialectiek’.
De seminars After Hegel en Hegel and Abstraction vinden plaats op zaterdag 8 juni. De week wordt op zondag 10 juni afgesloten met een lezing door Eric Santner, hoofd van het German Studies Department aan de Universiteit van Chicago (US), onder de titel Toward a Political Economy of the Flesh. Theory week June
The first week of June is Theory Week. On Tuesday 5 June the week begins with a lecture by Jodi Dean, professor in political science at the Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY (US). Dean will deal with the theory of communist desire via a critique of Wendy Brown, Antonio Negri and Alain Badiou. Filippo del Lucchese (Brunel University, London, UK) will follow with a lecture on the symptomatic relationship between law and conflict in Spinoza.
More Spinoza on Wednesday morning during the After 1968-seminar on feminist interpretations of Spinoza’s work by Anne Lefebvre, among others. Seminars on Simondon and Benjamin are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon; the evening is dedicated to CLiC.
On Thursday 6 and Friday 7 Formalization and Dialectics is taking place, a two-day conference dedicated to the ‘reanimation of the dialectic’.
The seminars After Hegel and Hegel and Abstraction are planned on Saturday 8 June.

Elena Bajo bij Jan van Eyck voor Manifesta 9
In het kader van het Parallel Events programma van Manifesta 9 werkt kunstenares Elena Bajo in de Jan van Eyck Academie. Vanaf 9 juni tot het eind van de zomer kunt u haar werk The Factory of Forms zien in de inkomhal.
Voor haar Manifesta-project onderzoekt Elena Bajo de archieven van in onbruik geraakte politieke ideeën, verbonden aan utopische en distopische gemeenschappen, en politieke feiten die de loop der geschiedenis hebben beïnvloed. Ze zal deze in een nieuwe context plaatsen, in dialoog met de hedendaagse en vroegere geschiedenis van de Manifesta site. Dit werk gaat met een veelheid aan stemmen over de constructie van het alledaagse.
Zaterdag 9 juni om 17u opent het Manifesta 9 programma van de Jan van Eyck met het werk van Elena Bajo en de tentoonstelling The Fox’s Legacy. U bent van harte welkom!
Elena Bajo at Jan van Eyck for Manifesta 9
In the framework of the Parallel Events programme of Manifesta 9, artist Elena Bajo is working at the Jan van Eyck Academie. Her work The Factory of Forms will be on display in the entrance hall for the whole summer, starting 9 June.
Elena Bajo will be investigating the archives of discarded political ideas that are connected to utopian and distopian communities and political facts that affected the course of history, recontextualizing them in a dialogue with the past and present industrial histories of the Manifesta site. The work is about constructing the common and will echo a plurality of voices.
Saturday 9 June at 17h the Manifesta 9 programme of the Jan van Eyck opens, with the work of Elena Bajo and the exhibition The Fox’s Legacy. You are most welcome!
Berlin Documentary Forum 2

New documentary practices are cross-disciplinary, dialectical, and above all performative, regarding documentary as the staging of particular relationships between documents, authors, and spectators. The second Berlin Documentary Forum sets out to present these new understandings of documentary in a program specially devised by international artists, filmmakers, cultural historians, and theorists. Filmmaker and theorist Florian Schneider, advising researcher in the Design Department, is one of the guests. On Sunday 3 June he will, together with Thomas Heise, reflect on the notion of cinematic continuity in relation to the historical continuity of colonialism and fascism.
Dancing on the Carpet – Esmé Valk
Dancing on the Carpet is a 38 page, handbound book that is partly screenprinted and partly riso printed. Upon opening the first page a red insert is revealed, containing the essay Dancing on the Carpet. The main part of the book displays the images on pages that have been bound according to a Japanese tradition.
The essay describes a personal view on the staging of dance inside a natural decor and the relationship between ideology, movement and its representation. The text also discusses the multiple ways in which the still image is tied to dance and the major role the life reform movement played in the development of German modern dance.

Corpo Comune: Capitolo II - Passare al bosco
Theory researcher Claudia Landolfi is taking part in Passare al bosco, a cultural event at Marte in Cava de Tirreni (IT). The event addresses the concept of the body in artistic, philosophical and sociological approaches. Landolfi will present a paper entitled ‘My Body is Not Mine’, together with Prof. Alfonso Amendola and Prof. Adalgiso Amendola.
Maria Barnas and Snejanka Mihaylova at Facing Forward
Advisor Maria Barnas and Fine Art researcher Snejanka Mihaylova are taking part in the May edition of Facing Forward. Art & Theory from a Future Perspective. The theme of this evening is Future’s Future, or: how should we look forward? Mihaylova will present Theatrum Futuri, a text written in symbols. She proposes a performance-reading in the form of a verbal improvisation, taking each symbol as a mode of exploring and reconfiguring ideas on the themes of ‘future’ and ‘performance’. Other guests are Oona Strathern, Defne Ayas, Hassnae Bouazza, Maarten Doorman and many more. Facing Forward will take place on Thursday 31 May from 20:00 until 22:30 hours at the Oude Lutherse Kerk in Amsterdam.
Black Velcro speelt in de Jan van Eyck Academie
Vrijdag 25 mei om 17.30 uur speelt Black Velcro, de band van kunstenaars Rik Meijers, Keetje Mans en Jowan van Barneveld opnieuw in de Jan van Eyck Academie. Het optreden vindt plaats in het kader van KunstTour Maastricht, en is meteen ook een goede gelegenheid om het glas te heffen op het zeer positieve advies van de Raad voor Cultuur voor de Jan van Eyck Academie.
Vorige maand gaf Black Velcro al een optreden tijdens de opening van Keep the Ghosts Away, de tentoonstelling van Meijers, Mans en van Barneveld. Een groot succes, dat beaamt ook ZwartGoud in een recensie (http://zwartgoud.net/2012/04/). Keep the Ghosts Away loopt nog tot en met komende zondag 27 mei. Tijdens dit laatste weekend kan u de tentoonstelling elke dag bezoeken van 13.00 uur tot 17.00 uur.

Black Velcro again at Jan van Eyck Academie
Friday 25 May at 17:30h Black Velcro, the band of visual artists Rik Meijers, Keetje Mans and Jowan van Barneveld will perform again in the Jan van Eyck Academie. The concert takes place in the framework of KunstTour Maastricht, and will at the same time be an occasion to celebrate the positive advice by the Council of Culture for the Jan van Eyck Academie earlier this week.
Last month Black Velcro already opened the exhibition Keep the Ghosts Away, the exhibition by Meijers, Mans and van Barneveld. A great success, as ZwartGoud confirmed in a review the day after (http://zwartgoud.net/2012/04/). Keep the Ghosts Away is on display until coming Sunday 27 May. During this last week-end you can visit the exhibition every day from 13:00 until 17:00.

Has the World Already Been Made? x 3
Using architectural conservation techniques Haseeb Ahmed (Fine Art Researcher) and Daniel Baird have been making molds of ornament, fractures, and surfaces in cities across the globe. What first looks like an act of graffiti is in fact an act of preservation, however recasting these fragments in plastic eliminates the specificity of the original.
These disparate fragments are brought together to construct a single space which cannot be reduced back to any of its origins. They coalesce to form a single artwork, effectively blurring the distinction between the contemporary, the replica and the experience of traditional sculpture.

Goed nieuws voor de Jan van Eyck Academie
Het vandaag verschenen advies van de Raad voor Cultuur adviseert aan de Jan van Eyck Academie € 1.000.000 subsidie toe te kennen voor de cultuurplanperiode 2013-2016. De Raad prijst de nieuwe inhoudelijke richting die de Jan van Eyck Academie inslaat, waarin de verhouding tussen talent en maatschappelijke vraagstukken centraal staat. Verbindingen met externe partners binnen de Euregio, samenwerkingen met de Universiteit en het kunstvakonderwijs in Maastricht, en de oprichting van de Hubert van Eyck Academie en de ‘Labs’ oogsten veel bijval in het advies. “(…) visionair en ondernemend”, aldus de Raad. Onnodig te zeggen dat de Jan van Eyck blij is met deze steun. Vanaf september zal zij uitvoering geven aan het nieuwe beleidsplan.

Good news for the Jan van Eyck Academie
Today the Council for Culture has published its advice, recommending that a subsidy of € 1,000,000 is to be allocated to the Jan van Eyck Academie, for the culture plan period 2013-2016. The Council praises the new direction taken by the Jan van Eyck Academie, focusing on the relationship between talent and social issues. Affiliations with external partners within the Euregion, collaborations with the University and the arts educational institutes in Maastricht, as well as the foundation of the Hubert van Eyck Academie and the ‘Labs’ were all highly praised in the advice: “(…) visionary and enterprising”, said the Council. Needless to say, the Jan van Eyck is very happy with this support. As of September, the institute will implement its new policy plan.

From Bank to Bank on a Gradual Slope

Exhibition by Eleni Kamma at Villa Romana, Firenze (IT). Starting point of the exhibition is the film Georgofili, a 27 minutes HD film produced in 2012, for the purposes of which Kamma conducted research during her residency at the Villa Romana. From Bank to Bank on a Gradual Slope stages, among others, the premiere of the film.
Maastricht Week of Entrepreneurship
Van 21 tot 27 mei 2012 vindt de vierde editie van de Maastricht Week of Entrepreneurship (MeWeek) plaats. MeWeek is een van de grootste evenementen voor onverschrokken, vernieuwende ondernemers vanuit de hele wereld. De week begint op 21 en 22 mei met een social media battle, gevolgd door allerlei activiteiten van 23 tot 27 mei: van interactieve workshops, open-huis debatten, motivatiesessies en games tot mini-lezingen.
Maastricht Week of Entrepreneurship
The fourth edition of Maastricht Week of Entrepreneurship (MeWeek) is scheduled to happen between 21 – 27 May 2012. Adrien Lucca. D65 study #2, equivalences / gradients / disappearances
Het nieuwste werk van voormalig onderzoeker Beeldende Kunst Adrien Lucca, D65 study n°2, ontwikkelt verschillende geometrische objecten die omschreven kunnen worden als ‘visueel constante perpetuele geometrische variaties’. Op een afstand van 10 tot 15 meter heeft elk hierop getekend object dezelfde kleur en graad van helderheid. Dichterbij zie je echter de details en kleuren.
Lucca ontwikkelde voor het eerst een systeem om de hoeveelheid verf te kwantificeren met behulp van hellingshoeken. Hij gebruikte willekeurige getallen om de gekwantificeerde kleuren over grids te verdelen.
D65 is de naam van een standaard lichtapparaat dat direct zonlicht simuleert (witblauw, een beetje zoals Noord-Europees licht) en dat veel in de auto- en kunststofindustrie wordt gebruikt.
Adrien Lucca. D65 study #2, equivalences / gradients / disappearances, 2012
The latest work by former Fine Art researcher Adrien Lucca, D65 study n°2, develops several geometric objects that can be defined as “a visually-constant perpetual geometric variation.” At 10 to 15 meters of distance, every object has the same colour and lightness, as you get closer, details and colours appear.
For the first time here Lucca developped a system to quantify the amount of paint using gradients, and used random numbers to distribute the quantified colours into grids.
D65 is the name of an standard illuminant that simulates sunlight (its is whitish-bluish, a bit like the light in north Europe) which is widely used in the car and plastics industry.
