Subject and subjectivation in the age of bio-politics. Life as concept.

Can we formulate a radical theory of emancipation starting from the only horizon of biological life? The aim of my project is to investigate the different hypotheses regarding the possibility of the emergence of new figures of emancipatory subjectivation within the bio-political paradigm, and to confront them with the critics addressed by Alain Badiou from the standpoint of his theory of subject and of an ethics of truth.

Despite their big differences, recent philosophical discoursivities concerning bio-politics and bio-power (Agamben, Negri, Esposito) have in common the tentative to articulate in an original manner what was already at stake in the latest theoretical production of Michel Foucault: on the one hand, an analysis of the genesis of a new paradigm of power whose object is the biological side of man (populations, bare life, etc.), and, on the other, research into a normative theory capable of providing new instruments to turn aside those powers by the means of an ethic of counter-conduct that would lead to new subjectivations.

Often, these theories treat bio-politics not as a specific, historical form of governmental rationality, proper of our time, but, in a more or less openly metaphysical manner, as the hidden reality of all politics whose ultimate root is life in itself. When biological life is the only resource of the political, is it really possible to oppose coercive powers? Do the presumed figures of emancipation, such as the ‘impersonal’, ‘multitudes’, ‘profanation’, belong to a ‘vital ontology’ homogenous to the ideology of ‘democratic materialism’ that those figures pretend to fight? On the other hand, the Badiousian idea that the political consists in the subtraction to any given situation and in the fidelity to the reactivation of an eternal Idea doesn’t imply the underestimation of an historical evaluation of the state of the political today? Do we have to oppose in a naïve manner two incompossible ‘ontologies’ and their view on the political? How to inscribe the Badiousian formulation of the concept of Subject with that of subjectivation in the era of bio-politics? And, finally, how can two diffracting projects be articulated, which both claim to be the inheritors of the materialistic refuse to bend to any transcendence in politics?

My project will imply the archaeological study of the emergence of the concept of bio-politics in contemporary philosophy, but also a critical redefinition of concepts such as bodies, powers and subjectivation.
