On the 4th of July we welcome fashion designer Telfar Clemens (B. 1985, Queens, NY) to the academy. He will give a talk at 17:00 in the Van Eyck auditorium.
In an industry where authenticity is a commodity, TELFAR is original to a fault. His methodical disruption of what separates high from low, men from women, novel from normal and art from commerce make the line a world unto itself. As fashion wages an industrial flattery of individuality, TELFAR produces a speculative uniformity. A vision perfectly illustrated in his twin commissions to design the staff uniforms for the IXth Berlin Biennale as well for the American hamburger-chain White Castle: a high-low matrix which is unmistakably TELFAR.
