The aim of my research is a detailed inquiry into the typographic language of the Greek civil service as experienced through its official state documents, their resulting – often haphazard – aesthetics, as well as their use as a tool of ordinary – and sometimes extraordinary – everyday transactions between the individual and the public administration.

More specifically, the components of my research will include: the typewriter (manual, electronic or otherwise) as a formal typesetting tool in the Greek civil service and, in particular, the extensive use of Courier as the primary typeface in the ‘branding’ of official state documents; the social and psychological implications of the resulting visual language and the ways it reflects national attitudes that eventually become established values; the possibility of establishing this particular visual language as a form of cultural legacy in Greece today.
