Jan van Eyck Academie
De Jan van Eyck Academie is een post-academische kunstinstelling. Zij biedt kunstenaars, ontwerpers en theoretici de kans hun talent verder te ontwikkelen. Daartoe stelt de Jan van Eyck de kennis van haar medewerkers, de ervaring van professionals uit het veld, en haar vele faciliteiten ten dienste van internationaal toptalent dat aan de academie de ideale omgeving ervaart die nodig is om te excelleren.
Binnen het internationale kunstenveld neemt de Jan van Eyck Academie een unieke positie in. De combinatie van beeldende kunst, ontwerpen en theorie staat garant voor een multidisciplinaire benadering waarbinnen disciplinaire grenzen ver en veelvuldig worden overschreden. Daarbij is de Jan van Eyck een open instituut dat samenwerking binnen en buiten de academie aanmoedigt en heeft zij alles in huis om een prominente rol te spelen in het (internationale) kunstdebat.
De Jan van Eyck richt zich op onderzoek en productie. Individuele kunstenaars, ontwerpers en theoretici kunnen onderzoek doen op basis van een eigen voorstel of aansluiten bij een project dat door de academie is geïnitieerd. Ook kunnen zij aan de academie producties realiseren. Binnen de verschillende projecten leiden – vaak verrassende – samenwerkingen tot nieuwe inzichten en oplossingen.
Omdat de academie geen leidmotief hanteert, variëren de onderzoeksthema’s van de replica als artistieke strategie tot de publicatiepraktijk van de Punk; van de transformatie van stedelijk gebied tot het snijvlak van kunst en politiek. Gerealiseerde producties zijn net zo divers in hun verschijningsvorm: ze variëren van installatie tot boekproductie, van tentoonstelling tot conferentie.
De Jan van Eyck Academie is gelegen in Maastricht: het uiterste zuiden van Nederland, centraal in de Euregio. Bezoekers zijn van harte welkom om te komen zien waar de Jan van Eyck voor staat: de vrijheid om nieuwe wegen te bewandelen, de rust en ruimte voor reflectie, de stimulans tot discussie, de passie voor het vak.
Jan van Eyck Academie
The Jan van Eyck Academie is a post-academic art institute. It offers artists, designers and theoreticians the opportunity to advance their talents. To that end, the Jan van Eyck makes the expertise of its staff, the experience of professionals in the field and its many facilities available to international top talents who find themselves in the ideal environment to excel.
The Jan van Eyck Academie has a unique position within the international art scene. The combination of fine art, design and theory guarantees a multi-disciplinary approach whereby disciplinary boundaries are crossed often and extensively. Moreover, the Jan van Eyck is an open institute that encourages collaboration within and outside of the academy; it has everything on hand to be able to play a prominent role in the (international) arts debate.
The Jan van Eyck is geared towards research and production. Individual artists, designers and theoreticians can do research based on their own proposals or they can participate in projects initiated by the academy. They can also realise productions at the academy. The – often surprising – collaborations within various projects lead to new insights and solutions.
Since the academy is not led by predetermined leitmotivs, the research subjects range widely, from replicas as artistic strategy to the publishing practice of the Punk movement; from the transformation of urban areas to the crossroads of art and politics. Realised productions are as diverse as the shapes they take: varying from installations to book productions, from conferences to exhibitions.
The Jan van Eyck Academie is located in Maastricht: the southernmost town in the Netherlands, at the centre of the Euregion. Visitors are very welcome to come and see what the Jan van Eyck stands for: the freedom to walk new roads, time and space for reflection, encouraging debate, professionalism.

De Jan van Eyck Academie is een multidisciplinair instituut met drie afdelingen: Beeldende Kunst, Ontwerpen en Theorie. Aan het hoofd van elke afdeling staat een team van adviserend onderzoekers die samen met de directeur verantwoordelijk zijn voor de selectie van nieuwe onderzoekers en – daarmee – van nieuwe onderzoeksprojecten. Ook initiëren zij zelf projecten waarvoor kunstenaars, ontwerpers en/of theoretici worden geworven.
De diverse – individuele en collectieve – projecten geven uiting aan het artistieke beleid van de verschillende afdelingen. De drie afdelingen werken nauw met elkaar samen. Onderzoeksprojecten doorkruisen de disciplinaire grenzen vaker wel dan niet en regelmatig vinden er grote evenementen plaats waaraan onderzoekers vanuit alle drie de afdelingen meewerken.
Fine Art, Design, Theory
The Jan van Eyck has three departments: Fine Art, Design and Theory. The departments are led by a team of advising researchers who, together with the director, are responsible for the selection of new researchers and thus of ensuing new research projects. Apart from this, they formulate additional projects, for which researchers can be recruited.
The various – individual and collective – projects express the artistic policy of each department. All three departments collaborate intensively: research projects commonly cross disciplinary borders. Moreover, the academy regularly organises large events in which researchers from all three departments cooperate.
Editorial Board
De Editorial Board behandelt de artistieke zaken van de academie: het initiatief en de opvolging inzake onderzoek en producties. Het advies van de Editorial Board is vereist voor productievoorstellen die een budget vergen dat meer bedraagt dan € 3.500,-. De Editorial Board beschikt over eigen productiefonds; inkomsten uit projecten van onderzoekers, afdelingen en het instituut vloeien hiernaar terug. De Editorial Board bestaat uit één adviserende onderzoeker per afdeling en de directeur.
De Editorial Board bestaat momenteel uit: Lex ter Braak, Hans-Christian Dany, Katja Diefenbach, Florian Schneider.
Editorial Board
The Editorial Board handles the artistic affairs of the academy: initiating and following up research and productions. For production proposals that require a budget in excess of € 3,500, a recommendation from the Editorial Board is required. The Editorial Board has its own production fund; revenues from projects by researchers, departments and the institute flow back into the production fund of the Editorial Board. The meeting comprises one advising researcher per department and the director.

Policy Board
De Policy Board behandelt de institutionele zaken van de academie: het beleid inzake selectie en begeleiding van (adviserend) onderzoekers, personeel, financiën, investeringen, werkplaatsen, coördinatie van producties, bibliotheek en documentatiecentrum, ex-onderzoekers en publieke relaties. De vergadering bestaat uit één adviserend onderzoeker per afdeling, de directeur en de adjunct-directeur.

Policy Board
The Policy Board deals with the institutional affairs of the academy: the policy principles relating to the selection and advice of (advising) researchers, personnel, finance, investments, workshops, production bureau, library and documentation centre, ex-researchers and public relations. The meeting comprises one advising researcher per department, the director and the deputy director.
The current Policy Board comprises: Lex ter Braak, Mladen Dolar, Laurens Schumacher, Imogen Stidworthy, John Palmesino.
Selectiecommissies
De selectiecommissies beoordelen de aanmeldingen van (aspirant-)onderzoekers. De selectie van onderzoekers wordt per afdeling uitgevoerd, conform de afdelingsstructuur van de academie. De commissies bestaan uit minimaal drie adviserend onderzoekers van de betreffende afdeling en de directeur.
Selection committees
The selection committees assess the applications of researchers and applicant researchers. The selection of researchers takes place within the department, in conformity with the departmental structure of the academy. The committee comprises the director and a minimum of three advising researchers.
