JVE-alumni op longlist Prix de Rome
De Jan van Eyck Academie feliciteert alumni Haseeb Ahmed, Jasper Coppes, Eleni Kamma en Falke Pisano met hun nominatie voor de Prix de Rome 2013. Een internationale jury selecteert eind maart 4 kunstenaars uit de longlist. Zij krijgen een werkbudget en de opdracht om nieuwe werk te maken dat wordt getoond in een groepstentoonstelling bij de Appel arts centre. Op basis van dit werk volgt in november een tweede juryronde, waarna de winnaar van de Prix de Rome bekend wordt gemaakt. De winnaar ontvangt een bedrag van € 40.000 en een werkperiode in Rome.
JVE-alumni on Prix de Rome longlist
The Jan van Eyck Academie congratulates alumni Haseeb Ahmed, Jasper Coppes, Eleni Kamma and Falke Pisano with their nomination for the Prix de Rome 2013! An international jury will select 4 artists from the longlist by the end of March. They will receive a work budget and an assignment to make new work which will be shown in a group exposition at the Appel arts centre. The winner of the Prix de Rome will be announced in after a second jury round based on this work. The winner will receive € 40,000 and a work period in Rome.
Designers & Artists 4 Genomics Award voor Haseeb Ahmed
Haseeb Ahmed, onderzoeker beeldende kunst, is één van de drie prijswinnaars van de Designers & Artists 4 Genomics Award. De DA4GA benadrukt en verkent de nieuwe mogelijkheden tussen design, de kunstsector en Life Sciences. Ahmed krijgt de prijs voor zijn project Fish Bone Chapel (Visgraatkapel) - een hybride gebouw, bestaande uit visgraten. De graten zijn modellen van vissen die zijn blootgesteld aan gifstoffen die genetische mutatie teweeg brengen. De ‘wervelgewelven’, geschubde muren en pulserende ventilatiekanalen zijn gemaakt van uitvergrote 3D prints van vissenskeletten. Op een speelse manier legt de Gratenkapel hiermee een historisch verband met de morbide architectuur van Capucijner monniken die de botten van hun broeders decoratief rangschikten om de overgang tussen leven en dood te symboliseren. Het project is ontwikkeld in samenwerking met het Netherlands Toxigenomics Centre.
Designers & Artists 4 Genomics Award for Haseeb Ahmed
Fine Art researcher Haseeb Ahmed is one of three prize winners for the Designers & Artists 4 Genomics Award. The DA4GA highlights and explores the exciting and novel possibilities between design, artistic practice and life sciences. The prize was awarded to Ahmed for his project Fish Bone Chapel is a hybrid building, existing of fish bones. The vertebrae vaults, scaled walls and beating circulation systems of this architecture are derived from enlarged 3D prints and the skeletal structure of fish exposed to mutagenic toxins. Playfully, the Fish Bone Chapel, which makes a historical connection with the morbid architecture of the Capuchin Monks who decorated the bones of their brothers to symbolize the transience of life and death. The project was developed in cooperation with the Netherlands Toxigenomics Centre.

Haseeb Ahmed nominated for Design and Art for Genomics Prize
Fine Art researcher Haseeb Ahmed continues to the final round of the Design and Art for Genomics Prize with his project Fish Bone Chapel. The project uses controlled genetic mutation in zebra fish and digital fabrication techniques to derive hybrid architectural forms.
Limburgse bakens bij TV Maastricht
Onderzoeker Beeldende Kunst Haseeb Ahmed nam deel aan The Fox’s Legacy / Manifesta 9 Parallel Events met zijn Limburg Beacons. In deze performance tracht Haseeb met gebouwen te communiceren via morsecode. TV Maastricht besteedde er aandacht aan in hun programma Sphinxpark Ontmoet!.

The Fox’s Legacy - Manifesta 9 Parallel Events
Onlangs is een industriële ruïne gevonden die opviel door zijn merkwaardige constructie. Deze vondst leidde tot een stroom van speculatieve analyses en verklaringen over haar herkomst en betekenis. Toch blijft het onduidelijk uit welke tijd zij komt en wat haar werkelijke functie is geweest. De tentoonstelling The Fox’s Legacy (De erfenis van de vos) openbaart dit vergeten erfgoed uit de Zuid-Limburgse regio. Monumenten dienen om te herinneren maar confronteren ons ook met ons vergeten. Wat gebeurde er precies, wat betekende dat en welke gevolgen had het, wie waren er bij betrokken – dit zijn de allereerste vragen, die maar zelden tot tevreden antwoorden leiden. Dat geeft ruimte voor de verbeelding die de kloof van het verleden kan overbruggen en waar verhalen vrij over heen bewegen.
Vanuit die achtergrond stellen Haseeb Ahmed, Clifford Borress, Steven Chodoriwsky, Jasper Coppes en Ina Kwon zich in The Fox’s Legacy twee kernvragen: hoe kunnen we de transformatie van de sociale, historische en ecologische bestemmingen van ons landschap zichtbaar maken? En is het heden uiteindelijk niet meer dan de plaats van de eindeloze herhaling van de constructie, deconstructie en reconstructie van ons collectief geheugen?
Met de tentoonstelling The Fox’s Legacy neemt Jan van Eyck Academie deel aan het Parallel Events programma van Manifesta 9, de Europese Biennale voor Hedendaagse Kunst die dit jaar plaatsvindt in en rond de mijnsite van Waterschei, Genk (BE).
The Fox’s Legacy opent zaterdag 9 juni om 17:00, en loopt tot en met 30 september 2012. De tentoonstelling is geopend van maandag t/m vrijdag van 9u tot 17u. U bent van harte welkom!

The Fox’s Legacy - Manifesta 9 Parallel Events
Recently a peculiar industrial ruin was found that struck the eye due to its curious construction. This discovery led to an impulse of speculative analyses and explanations about its origin and meaning. It remains unclear what its purpose may have been, or in which period it should be situated. The Fox’s Legacy (De erfenis van de vos) reveals this forgotten inheritance of the Zuid Limburg region. Landmarks such as these might be receptacles of forced forgetting rather than commemoration. Consequently, imagination takes up space in the stories that fill in the abyss of memory.
Against this background, Haseeb Ahmed, Clifford Borress, Steven Chodoriwsky, Jasper Coppes and Ina Kwon pose two key questions: how do we visualize the transformation of the social, historical and environmental destinations of our landscape? And what is the present but the site of a constant repetition of the construction, deconstruction and reconstruction of our collective memory?
With the exhibition The Fox’s Legacy, the Jan van Eyck Academie takes part in the Parallel Events programme of Manifesta 9, the European Biennial for Contemporary Art, which takes place in and around the coalmine of Waterschei, Genk (BE).
The Fox’s Legacy opens Saturday 9 June at 17:00h and runs until 30 September. The exhibition is open from Monday to Friday from 9:00h to 17:00h. You are very welcome!

Has the World Already Been Made? x 3
Using architectural conservation techniques Haseeb Ahmed (Fine Art Researcher) and Daniel Baird have been making molds of ornament, fractures, and surfaces in cities across the globe. What first looks like an act of graffiti is in fact an act of preservation, however recasting these fragments in plastic eliminates the specificity of the original.
These disparate fragments are brought together to construct a single space which cannot be reduced back to any of its origins. They coalesce to form a single artwork, effectively blurring the distinction between the contemporary, the replica and the experience of traditional sculpture.

Has the World Already Been Made? at Merge Visible
In November 2011, Haseeb Ahmed and Daniel G. Baird collaborated on the piece Has the World Already Been Made?, produced and exhibited at the Jan van Eyck Academie. Now the piece will be included in the exhibition Merge Visible at Prairie Productions, 1314 West Randolph Street, Chicago IL (US), opening on 19 April 2012. The show is part of a series of experimental exhibitions organised by curator Joshua Citarella.

De Appel Curatorial Programme 2011-2012 presenteert Three Artists Walk into a Bar…, een serie werken en interventies die buiten de traditionele tentoonstellingsruimte plaatsvinden. De speciaal voor dit project vervaardigde werken zullen daarnaast via discussies, gesprekken en openbare bijeenkomsten in de Appel Jongensschool en de website www.threeartistswalkintoabar.com hun weg vinden naar het publiek. Door de eigenschappen van humor aan te wenden wordt de potentie van kunst als kritisch instrument om sociale, politieke en culturele kwesties te analyseren op de proef gesteld. Tegelijkertijd wordt door de onconventionele structuur een gemeenschap van peers, experts en verschillende publieken samengebracht. De keuze voor humor komt voort uit het geloof in diens sociale aspecten; de eigenschap om subversieve stemmen en onderdrukte perspectieven naar boven te halen.
De Jan van Eyck Academie is verheugd opnieuw aan de Appel Curatorial Programme te kunnen meewerken. Three Artists Walk into a Bar…

De Appel Curatorial Programme 2011-2012 presents Three Artists Walk into a Bar…, a series of works and interventions taking place outside the traditional exhibition space. Furthermore, the works, purpose-made for this project, will be made accessible to the public through discussions, talks and public meetings in de Appel Boys’ School and via the website www.threeartistswalkintoabar.com. By employing the properties of humour, the potential of art as a critical instrument to analyse social, political and cultural issues is put to the test. At the same time, the project’s unconventional structure brings together a community of peers, experts and various audiences. The choice for humour stems from a belief in its social aspects: its ability to elicit subversive voices and repressed perspectives.
The Jan van Eyck Academie is pleased to be able to collaborate once again with de Appel Curatorial Programme. Haseeb Ahmed at Bath Annual Readings Conference
From 6 to 8 April 2012 Haseeb Ahmed will be in Moscow (RU) for Between Dog and Wolf: Cultural Mechanisms for Identity in Diaspora, Bath Annual Readings Conference, where he will present a paper entitled Form and Identity in Midwestern American Mosques.
Haseeb Ahmed at Platypus International Convention
On 31 March and 1 April 2012, the Platypus International Convention will take place in Chicago, IL (US). Haseeb Ahmed will present a lecture entitled News from the Netherlands Would-Be-Left / The Cultural Sector’s Opposition to Sweeping Funding Cuts. The lecture is a presentation to an essay Ahmed wrote for FUSE Magazine.
How to Cast Anachronisms
On 16 March 2012 Haseeb Ahmed will give a lecture on his artwork as it appropriates techniques of historical conservation in architecture at Hazara University in Mansehra-North Western Frontier Province (PK). The lecture will start at 18:00 (Pakistan Time Zone); please note that the lecture will be in Urdu.
