The Fox’s Legacy - Manifesta 9 Parallel Events
Onlangs is een industriële ruïne gevonden die opviel door zijn merkwaardige constructie. Deze vondst leidde tot een stroom van speculatieve analyses en verklaringen over haar herkomst en betekenis. Toch blijft het onduidelijk uit welke tijd zij komt en wat haar werkelijke functie is geweest. De tentoonstelling The Fox’s Legacy (De erfenis van de vos) openbaart dit vergeten erfgoed uit de Zuid-Limburgse regio. Monumenten dienen om te herinneren maar confronteren ons ook met ons vergeten. Wat gebeurde er precies, wat betekende dat en welke gevolgen had het, wie waren er bij betrokken – dit zijn de allereerste vragen, die maar zelden tot tevreden antwoorden leiden. Dat geeft ruimte voor de verbeelding die de kloof van het verleden kan overbruggen en waar verhalen vrij over heen bewegen. 

Vanuit die achtergrond stellen Haseeb Ahmed, Clifford Borress, Steven Chodoriwsky, Jasper Coppes en Ina Kwon zich in The Fox’s Legacy twee kernvragen: hoe kunnen we de transformatie van de sociale, historische en ecologische bestemmingen van ons landschap zichtbaar maken? En is het heden uiteindelijk niet meer dan de plaats van de eindeloze herhaling van de constructie, deconstructie en reconstructie van ons collectief geheugen?  

Met de tentoonstelling The Fox’s Legacy neemt Jan van Eyck Academie deel aan het Parallel Events programma van Manifesta 9, de Europese Biennale voor Hedendaagse Kunst die dit jaar plaatsvindt in en rond de mijnsite van Waterschei, Genk (BE).

The Fox’s Legacy opent zaterdag 9 juni om 17:00, en loopt tot en met 30 september 2012. De tentoonstelling is geopend van maandag t/m vrijdag van 9u tot 17u. U bent van harte welkom!

Recently a peculiar industrial ruin was found that struck the eye due to its curious construction. This discovery led to an impulse of speculative analyses and explanations about its origin and meaning. It remains unclear what its purpose may have been, or in which period it should be situated. The Fox’s Legacy (De erfenis van de vos) reveals this forgotten inheritance of the Zuid Limburg region. Landmarks such as these might be receptacles of forced forgetting rather than commemoration. Consequently, imagination takes up space in the stories that fill in the abyss of memory. 

Against this background, Haseeb Ahmed, Clifford Borress, Steven Chodoriwsky, Jasper Coppes and Ina Kwon pose two key questions: how do we visualize the transformation of the social, historical and environmental destinations of our landscape? And what is the present but the site of a constant repetition of the construction, deconstruction and reconstruction of our collective memory? 

With the exhibition The Fox’s Legacy, the Jan van Eyck Academie takes part in the Parallel Events programme of Manifesta 9, the European Biennial for Contemporary Art, which takes place in and around the coalmine of Waterschei, Genk (BE).

The Fox’s Legacy opens Saturday 9 June at 17:00h and runs until 30 September. The exhibition is open from Monday to Friday from 9:00h to 17:00h. You are very welcome!
