Has the World Already Been Made? x 3Using architectural conservation techniques Haseeb Ahmed (Fine Art Researcher) and Daniel Baird have been making molds of ornament, fractures, and surfaces in cities across the globe. What first looks like an act of graffiti is in fact an act of preservation, however recasting these fragments in plastic eliminates the specificity of the original. These disparate fragments are brought together to construct a single space which cannot be reduced back to any of its origins. They coalesce to form a single artwork, effectively blurring the distinction between the contemporary, the replica and the experience of traditional sculpture.  The artists have begun to compose an artist book that compiles their inventory; please take a look at Replicating.tumblr.com for their archive of instances of replication in art.

Today the Council for Culture has published its advice, recommending that a subsidy of € 1,000,000 is to be allocated to the Jan van Eyck Academie, for the culture plan period 2013-2016. D65 study #2, equivalences / gradients / disappearancesHet nieuwste werk van voormalig onderzoeker Beeldende Kunst Adrien Lucca, D65 study n°2, ontwikkelt verschillende geometrische objecten die omschreven kunnen worden als ‘visueel constante perpetuele geometrische variaties’. Op een afstand van 10 tot 15 meter heeft elk hierop getekend object dezelfde kleur en graad van helderheid. Dichterbij zie je echter de details en kleuren. Lucca ontwikkelde voor het eerst een systeem om de hoeveelheid verf te kwantificeren met behulp van hellingshoeken. De jury: “In dit werk, dat blijk geeft van een sterk gevoel voor politieke urgentie en complexiteit, geeft de kunstenaar een camera aan een Palestijnse familie in de zwaar bezette stad Hebron. Zupraner kiest echter niet voor een eendimensionaal portret van een politiek conflict, maar compliceert het leven van de kijker met een gespleten scherm waarin deze zichzelf niet alleen geconfronteerd ziet met de gewelddadige realiteit van de bezetting, maar ook met de vreugde van het slachtoffer als dat in staat blijkt agressief te zijn; met de ambivalentie van het gooien van sneeuwballen als tegelijk speels en gewelddadig; met de Israëlische regisseur zelf als iemand die profiteert van het Palestijnse lijden. Provinciale Erepenning voor Piet KillaarsOp 27 april 2012 ontving Piet Killaars, oud-deelnemer aan de Jan van Eyck Academie, de Provinciale Erepenning uit handen van gedeputeerde Noël Lebens. De penning is aan Killaars toegekend uit waardering voor zijn grote bijdrage aan de moderne kunst en zijn voorbeeldrol voor veel jonge kunstenaars in Limburg. Provincial Medal of Honour for Piet Killaars
On 27 April 2012, deputy Noël Lebens handed out the Provincial Medal of Honour to Piet Killaars, former participant at the Jan van Eyck Academie. Killaars received the medal in appreciation of his large contribution to modern art and his exemplary nature for many young artists in Limburg. Until the end of June, a selection of works by Killaars will be on show at the Gouvernement aan de Maas.

Opening Jan van Eyck Labs
U bent van harte uitgenodigd voor de feestelijke opening van de Jan van Eyck Labs op donderdag 29 maart om 17.00 uur. De Jan van Eyck heeft de laatste maanden haar werkplaatsen vernieuwd en gerevitaliseerd. De Labs zijn de fysieke plekken voor inspiratie en innovatie, zien wordt hier maken en denken slaat om in experimenteren. De Labs vormen de spil van de Academie, de ontmoetingsplaatsen voor haar eigen deelnemers en kunstenaars, ontwerpers, schrijvers, dichters, denkers en studenten van buiten.   

De opening van de Labs biedt u de kans een wandeling door het mooie Peutzgebouw te maken, de mogelijkheden van de Labs te beproeven en de tentoonstellingen rond de naamgevers van de Labs te zien:

Tijdens de opening worden het nieuwe beleidsplan van de Jan van Eyck De levende spiegel. Kunst in de wereld gepresenteerd en het eerste essay uit de Van Eyck Spiegelreeks, Braakman en ik door Maria Barnas. Beide publicaties zijn gedrukt in het Charles Nypels Lab en op 29 maart verkrijgbaar.

De herinrichting van de Labs is mede mogelijk gemaakt door de financiële ondersteuning van de Provincie Limburg en de Charles Nypels Stichting.

You are cordially invited to attend the festive opening of the Jan van Eyck Labs on Thursday 29 March at 17:00 hrs. Over the past months the Jan van Eyck Academie has renewed and revitalised its workshops. The Labs are sites where inspiration and innovation reign - this is where ideas materialise and thoughts lead to experimentation. The Labs play a pivotal role in the academy, they are meeting places for Jan van Eyck participants and artists, designers, writers, poets, thinkers and students from outside. 

The opening of the Labs will give you an opportunity to take a stroll through the beautiful building designed by architect Peutz, try out what can be done in the Labs and visit the exhibitions that show work by the name givers of the Labs:

At the opening the new policy plan of the Jan van Eyck, De levende spiegel. Kunst in de wereld, will be presented, as well as Maria Barnas’ text Braakman en ik, the first essay in the Van Eyck Spiegelreeks. Both publications are productions of the Charles Nypels Lab and will be available on 29 March.  

The Province of Limburg and the Charles Nypels Foundation financially contributed to the redevelopment of the Labs.

Nieuw auditoriumOp 10 januari is het nieuwe auditorium in gebruik genomen. Verkavelde ruimtes werden opengebroken en gerestaureerd tot een groot en licht auditorium. Dit auditorium biedt plaats aan publieksactiviteiten, ontmoetingen, symposia, screenings, debatten. Het belichaamt de Jan van Eyck Academie als nieuwe publieke ruimte. This auditorium will be the location for public events, meetings, symposia, screenings, debates; it embodies the Jan van Eyck Academie as a new public space.
