My research focuses on the Israeli-controlled ‘H2’ sector of Hebron, West Bank – home to an enclave of Jewish settlers entrenched in the midst of a predominantly Arab Muslim population. In the wake of mutual Arab-Jewish violence and crippling Israeli military policies, present-day, post-Intifada H2 Hebron is a heavily militarised, largely depopulated zone. Palestinian residents, by direct or implicit pressure, have fled many of the homes, stores, and streets surrounding the Jewish settlements – leaving a ‘ghost town’ in the heart of the city.
Arguably the most violent and volatile friction point in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, H2 Hebron is a locus of competing national, religious, and territorial agendas. In my research I approach it as a ‘laboratory’ for examining the interactions and exchanges taking place within the Israeli-Arab relationship – locally as well as nationally, concretely as well as symbolically. Employing a range of artistic practices and visual mediums (live video streaming; community-based, ‘home movie’ production; photographic investigations and architectural renderings), I seek to map out a visual and human environment that is at once both geographically and historically specific as well as emblematic of certain broader, global oppositions and collisions.
