Matthew C. Wilson (US)

Matthew C. Wilson (b. 1982, USA) holds an MFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University. He has been a participant in the Whitney Independent Study Program and various residencies including Fondazione Antonio Ratti/CSAV and Skowhegan. Wilson has been selected for the 2018 Artistic Research Residency at Tabakalera in San Sebastián, Spain.

Wilson works primarily in video and sculpture, often presented together in installations. Viewers encounter mercurial materials, sites, and personae animated by Modernity’s shape-shifting historical forces of capitalism and colonialism. In Wilson’s work, Enlightenment modes of seeing are checked by what eludes them -- a ritualistic encounter with forces yet to be understood -- to precipitate a perceptual exorcism aimed at loosening history’s grip on the future.
