Giuseppe Licari (IT_NL)
NEARCH residency

Giuseppe Licari (b. 1980, IT) is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Rotterdam. In his practice Licari explores the socio-economical, cultural and political processes that intervene on, and alter the form of contemporary landscapes. At the Van Eyck Licari has been working under the aegis of NEARCH (New Scenarios for a Community-Involved Archaeology) studying the landscape of the mining industry in the Benelux, especially that in Limburg. His photographs reveal the unexplored territories of the slag heaps created as by-products of the mining activities. Through his study of the soil, Licari investigates the ways such landscapes are constituted, and the fundamental role of legislation and political discourse in establishing this man made reality.
